About Us

This page has everything you need to know about who we are, how to book your next stay with us, and how to find us.

One of the main reasons so many people choose homestay accommodation over motels and hotels is that a homestay offers a golden opportunity to connect with local people and hear what life is really like from our point of view. But it doesn't just stop there! This is also your chance to share with us what life is like from wherever you come from, and any tales worth telling about your adventure.

The Ngaio Apartments and Homestay are run by a mother and son duo, who have lived in Ngaio for a combined total of more than 70 years. Share your Wellington experience with us and enjoy personal hospitality.

Jennifer is principally a home maker, and has lived in Ngaio for over forty years raising a large family of 6 children.

However, when she is not chatting with guests or pottering around in the garden she is indulging in her other passion: music. Jennifer plays the piano in New Zealand's top department store, Kirckaldie and Stains Ltd, every lunch time, and enjoys relaxing at home by either playing the piano or harp.

Jennifer would love to hear your story when you next visit.

Chris is the youngest of a large family, but in no way the least of the bunch! He is a senior software developer by day, but always has numerous other activities on the go at other times.

One of these other activities is flying. Chris took-up flying in 2003, and weekend by weekend, eventually got his PPL in 2006.

He also enjoys talking to guests and is an occasional squash player.

House and self-contained apartments

Our house is a little unconventional, but this is what gives it its character. Although built in the sixties, it is modeled on European open-plan architectures of the time, which was ahead of its time as far as New Zealand design goes.

The house has stood the test of time, witnessing much development in Ngaio over the years. The house is very handy to the local commuter train service that runs frequently (although you won't hear it), and we recommend guests day tripping to leave your car in our driveway and take the train to/from the city. (There is also a bus stop nearby, but buses only run at peak times and will be full.)

Several years ago, we acquired the neighboring property, which had 2 apartments on it and a nice garden area. We refurbished the apartments and landscaped the garden and now provide them as bed and breakfast or short term accommodation for our guests. This section has a 2-car carport, but guests may park down our driveway if there are no other cars already parked there.

How to find us

Ngaio is deceptively close to the city, yet feels far away from it thanks to the local geography. It can be approached from either the north or the south, depending on which way you are travelling.

From The ferry/city

  1. Travel north via the Hutt road or Aotea Quay
  2. Turn left onto Kaiwharawhara Road (Ngaio Gorge)
  3. Once over the gorge, continue down the other side until arriving at a round about.
  4. Turn right onto Ottowa Road
  5. In less than 1km you will come to a tiny round-about. Turn left onto Awarua Street
  6. Take the 2nd right onto Fox Street
  7. Our driveway will be on the right

From Johnsonville (SH1 or SH2 via Centennial Highway)

  1. From the main roundabout in Johnsonville, go straight through the roundabout onto Moorefield Road, such that the McDonalds is on your left as you go past
  2. continue along this road for about 5 minutes. It changes name a few times, until eventually becoming Ottowa Road
  3. At the 3rd round-about since Johnsonville, turn right onto Awarua Street
  4. Take the 2nd right onto Fox Street
  5. Our driveway will be on the right
